After nearly 4,500 happy punters, Utopia, a swingers club on The Gold Coast, QLD Australia is closing. This Saturday 5 April 2008 after almost two years the club has had to close It's doors.
The issue is that local council zoning simply doesn't include a category for this type of club. The clubs can stay open until someone complains. Rumour has it that the complaints about the premises didn't Come from neighbours, but other disgruntled parties.
Other clubs in Queensland are having similar problems - operating without formal planning permission. Due to difficulties renewing the lease, and uncertainty regarding Gold Coast City council Renee has decided to close the doors at Utopia after this weekend's party.
Utopia first opened with a bang (or two) on Friday May 19, 2006 . Since then they've had around 4,500 people through the door. The place was open every Fri and Sat since then plus a few Sunday afternoons.
One memorable couple travelled all the way from Ireland to go to Utopia. So keen were they to party, they travelled direct from the aircraft, through customs, and straight to Utopia.
With nearly 900 members, couples, single guys and single girls, the club has been an icon on the Coast for the last couple of years.
The gentleman of one couple we spoke to had a long white beard and a red suit told us Christmas parties at Utopia were great. Lot's of girls sat on his knee, and some of them even gave him a little kiss. He mentioned something about multiple blow jobs in the shadow room but we didn't pursue him on that.

This Saturday promises to be the biggest night ever. The owners expect about 290 people through the door. Entry is $40 a couple for members, $80 for non-members. Arrive early - there'll be standing room only! Bring You own kleenex - there may be a tear or two shed at the end.

The good news is - you can't keep a good woman down (well there is one way). We are sure this is not the end of Utopia. When one door closes another one opens.

We might not need a reason to party, but hey we are gonna rock at Utopia one last time... for the good times. We have made THE best friends from many a late night at the club. Things may never be the same, lets hope they get better, but Right now it's time to PARTEEE!!!
As the current record holder....for the shadow room at Utopia....I think it needs to be extended and carried into history. Head count that is not me....so 13 and 14 where are you?

Well that is a real shame, Bryan and I are saddened to hear of the pending closing.
We gave all our items to Utopia from the Hubert Street venue when they first opened and have been so pleased to see that they were of great use to starting the venue, and enjoyed many nights partying down there.
It is sad that an alternative form of the scene is closing down and we are saddened by this.
Good luck Renee, and we hope you get some well earned rest as we know just how hard and demanding it is running such a venue.
It is a sad day to see one of the few real swingers clubs shut there doors due to some nasty tactics by some very insecure people.
But i am sure you will be back to show them how it is done.
Seems like gold coast has different rules then qld as one club has houses less than 50 metres from their large sign,but they continue to operate.......
It is sad to see that happy couple can't make a nice comment to honour one of qld's swingers clubs, without making a nasty remark about another. It is time to let be. For all anyone knows they are the ones making complaints about the swingers clubs in qld.
As stated alot of clubs are having problems that do not have formal planning.

Unfortunately the truth hurts the ones making all the complaints,we will be attending saturday night.

It is not hard to get Freedom of Information on who reported you, we did and we know about our venue, so can i suggest you do the same. !

This debate will never end, who did what to who etc etc.. Most of us know exactly who did what.. The point is, Utopia is closing, the council has No planning for people in the Lifestyle to enjoy themselves in the privacy of a club. Some people are still living in the dark ages when it comes to swingers. Until that concept changes and the general public realise that their children, families and small pets are safe in close proximity to a swingers club, we are at a stale Mate. But enough of the politics. Lets remember the good times, the positives, without clubs where would we have all met? I know exactly where the complaint came from (yes I now about the lenghty Freedom of Information process and have all the information I need.)
Those persons whome have had something to do with the closing of Utopia, wether it is/was a formal complaint or not. Thank you I am very flattered!! I hope you are happy... But it is certainly not the end, "whatever doesn't kill you will make you stronger".
I have learn't a great deal over the last 2 years of owning and opperating utopia, and this is just the beginning. Anyone who knows me personally, will know I love a challenge!
So many people I have met through this journey have taught me so many things and I realise that we need more places like utopia and more events like Swingfest, with the whole "lifestyle" industry working together to enhance the lifestyle. Those that have the community at heart, will prosper and flourish, those that don't, won't.
"Birds of a feather, flock together" and I'm sure this is the reason Utopia has become what it is today. I would like to thank each and every member and visitor for making the Utopian community what it is
I have have so many emails, SMS and phone calls wishing support, again I thank you. I have always said Utopia is not me. I only supply the venue, the rest is you guys.
