Some things may be lost with The close of the doors of Utopia Swingers Club at Mermaid, but the memories will live on forever.
A couple of our hottie readers share their unique experience of the last night at Utopia on the Gold Coast ....
Please feel free to add your comments to the bottom of this article and we'll out the whole lot together as a bit of a memento. If anyone took a camera please send us some pics and we'll publish them too!
FRIDAY NIGHT
"L" and I were lucky enough to be able to attend the final 2 nights over the past weekend. I'm writing this a little later than usual, as the party hangover has only just receeded. The term "getting too old for this shit" was bandied around by the regulars quite a bit. But what can You do when your favourite adult venue is closing ? You have to party hard of course !
We arrived quite early on Friday, with Cpl_in_Blk in tow (thanks for the lift !) and we managed to have a quiet drink with Renee and Jeff and Louise, Leandra, Michelle before the rabble arrived. There is nothing better than getting to the club early and listening to Leandra's latest story (she has a few) over a chilled glass of shampoo.
The rest of the larger than normal Friday crowd filtered in over the ensuing hours, and we spent a lot of the night out in the beer garden catching up with people we had'nt seen for a while. The imminent closure seemed to bring a few of the more reclusive swingers out of hiding. We even had a visit from N & D who run RTZ at Calamvale. They wanted to get down and see the club before It closed, and their comments on the setup were very favourable. RTZ were one of the main supporters of Gold Coast Swingfest, so its always good to catch up with the guys. You'll be hearing more about this great venue over the coming months.
One thing was really strange about the evening. 4 single guys had booked in for the night, but not one showed ! The single girls were showing the strain, and a couple even Left early ! Even Leandra called it an early night (relatively) so she could have her beauty sleep for Saturday. We stayed on till closing, with Renee attempting to shoo me out the door around 4am. She really does need a bigger stick to chase us out with. "L" and I had spent so much of the night gasbagging, we'd only managed to mount the 'Swing' once the whole bloody night !
SATURDAY NIGHT
The night was a blur.. a total blur. I know we started out with a few regulars at our place for some 'preparty' drinkies, but after the lift down, it kind of dissapeared into a crowd of mad partygoers determined to send the club off with a bang ! The bits that stood out for us.
1.) The number of people who made the effort to get down from ALL sorts of places (Even GYMPIE!!!!) on the last night. People who had sworn they were busy even cancelled prior appointments to Come along and suprise some of us.
2.) The number of times I heard people say " This is the best place we have ever been too !". I watched over 200 people celebrate the club for what it had become. I could see the joy in Renee's face at every turn when people congratulated them on what they have built.
3.) Having a drink with D & P to celebrate their engagement at the club. D and I actually know each other outside of the clubs circles and it was a shock to both of us to bump into each other at the club. Seeing 2 people so into each other, yet enjoying what the club has to offer was refreshing.
4.) Dancing our arses off to " I just wanna fucking dance" FOR THE LAST TIME AT MERMAID ! - At this.. I cried (Joking)
5.) Doing the 'circuit' through the upstairs and downstairs parts and bumping into so many people we now call friends rather than just people we know from 'the club'.... this makes for a long slow trip I can tell you !
6.) Reading the awesome things people wrote on the "SHEET". Some great words and memories.
7.) Watching a relatively new couple enjoy themselves, and run around all night with smiles on their faces. They said "we did'nt know people like you guys or this place ever existed !!!" When we told them the club was closing, the look of devastation won't be easily forgotten. But its OK, I hope they gave someone their email address :)
So many great memories. So many people that have become more than just Swinging acquaintances. Utopia at Mermaid lives on in our memories as one of the 'nice' places, with awesome people. The club consistently had good numbers of swingers, and consistently good reports from its customers. I doubt very much we have heard the end of Utopia as a brand. I doubt it very very much.
Until next time we meet, in some well lit beer garden, big enough for 100 people, with No parking and noise issues, all dressed up in some wacky theme, ready to party till 3am and dance to "THAT SONG".............adieu.
